Chair of Fiji's Constituency Boundaries Commission replaced

7:29 am on 25 October 2007

The chair of the Constituency Boundaries Commission in Fiji has had to be replaced even before the body's first meeting to draw up new constituency boundaries ahead of the March 2009 general election.

Suva lawyer Ulamila Fa-Tuituku had accepted the chair but has stepped down citing family and personal commitments.

The interim attorney general, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, says President Iloilo has appointed Adi Koila Mara Nailatikau, wife of the interim foreign affairs minister Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, to be the new chair.

Adi Koila, who is also a lawyer, works for the same law firm as Ms Fa-Tuituku.

The other members of the Constituency Boundaries Commission are Father Kevin Barr from a Catholic Church NGO and a former senior civil servant, Albert Queet.

The Constituency Boundaries Commission is tasked with drawing up new constituency boundaries for the next general election based on population data gathered in the September census.

The Fiji Bureau of Statistics says preliminary census figures will be made available next week.
