France appoints new high commissioner in New Caledonia

11:53 am on 26 October 2007

The French government has appointed a new high commissioner to New Caledonia, Yves Dassonville, just over a week after Michel Mathieu resigned from the post.

Mr Mathieu had tendered his resignation after disagreeing with a visiting minister, Christian Estrosi, on how to deal with a union rally and social unrest in general.

Mr Dassonville has been working in Mr Estrosi's office and previously worked in French Polynesia.
