Six Fiji soldiers and a police officer suspected of the murder of a villager have been stopped from leaving the country for peace keeping duties in Iraq.

Fiji TV reports that the seven are suspects in the death of Nimilote Verebasaga who died after being detained by security forces early this year.

The TV report says the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions sought a court order when it learnt that they were about to leave Fiji with a contingent of over 200 officers for United Nations duties in Iraq.

It says the court order was issued just in time to stop the seven from boarding a UN charter aircraft at Nadi Airport during the weekend.
