Solomons Prime Minister planning to sue Transparency official for defamation

The Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare says he is considering suing the executive officer of Transparency Solomon Islands for defamation.

Mr Sogavare claims that Joses Tuhanuku made false allegations of corruption against him.

He says Mr Tuhanuku claimed Mr Sogavare had succumbed to corruption in first supporting the Snyder Rini camp after last year's election and later backing an Opposition motion of no confidence.

Mr Sogavare says he supports freedom of expression but that there is a limit to one's entitlement to express opinions about how others conduct themselves.

He says being the head of an organisation that claims to believe in transparency and accountability does not give Mr Tuhanuku the right to make baseless statements.
