Outgoing Fiji says judiciary intact despite December coup

4:32 pm on 2 November 2007

An outgoing Suva High Court judge, Justice Gerard Winter, says the independence and integrity of the judiciary in Fiji remains intact.

Justice Winter has told Radio Legend that while some people have questioned the independence of the judiciary since December last year, the nation can rest assured that there is no interference from anyone in the process of law in Fiji.

Justice Winter says the issue is whether the process of justice in the country is transparent and whether predictable decisions are being delivered in a timely fashion.

He says if there is transparency, predictability, and timeliness, then people will receive justice.

Justice Winter, whose own impartiality was questioned in the recent trial of navy commander Francis Kean based on his stand on last December's coup, says judges and magistrates in Fiji are doing their best.

He says his fellow judges and magistrates are a dedicated and hardworking group of people who are doing a tremendous job in trying circumstances because of the limited resources in the country.

Justice Winter, whose four-year contract came to an end on Wednesday, will return to his home in New Zealand this weekend.
