Air Marshall Islands on the verge of bankruptcy

9:15 am on 5 November 2007

The government-run airline in the Marshall Islands is verging on bankruptcy as the country continues to suffer without a domestic air service.

There has been no domestic air service since October 10th, which is forcing people to travel by ship.

Even the most optimistic predictions say it will be another 10 days or more before one of the two planes will be back in action.

Air Marshall Islands mechanical woes have hit the Bikini Atoll dive programme after the repeated cancellations of flights.

The hold-ups have costing the business, that draws scuba divers from Europe and America, nearly 200,000 US dollars.
