Papua New Guinea police say an Italian man and his Filipina wife claim an armed gang abducted and robbed them of two million US dollars in gold and cash in Port Moresby during weekend.

The couple, whose names have been withheld, said they were snatched from their downtown apartment on Friday night and not released until yesterday morning.

Police told the newspaper, The National, they were investigating but said the gold-trading couple had yet to give full statements because they were still traumatised by their ordeal.

The captors allegedly drove the couple to their city office early on Saturday morning and forced the husband to open the safe from which they removed gold and cash, worth in total about 2 million US dollars.
