Fiji's interim PM accuses some chiefs of trying to manipulate soldiers

Fiji's interim prime minister says some chiefs have tried to manipulate soldiers and split up the military in the past and they are still around trying to grab power.

Commodore Frank Bainimarama has told Radio Legend that some of these power hungry chiefs still have ulterior motives.

He says it had come as a shock to him that these chiefs would try their tactics inside the military camp.

Commodore Bainimarama has expressed concern about the influence of chiefs over ordinary Fijians who are told what to do under chiefly patronage.

He says chiefs and politicians from the events of 2000 are still around trying to lead the people astray.

But Commodore Bainimarama says a lot of lessons were learnt in the 2000 coup and army mutiny.

Commodore Bainimarama says the military, and he as its commander, will no longer be complacent about such issues as it will only take Fiji back.

He said in an act of magnanimity he had set free soldiers involved in the May 2000 coup but a week later on November 2nd 2000 they turned against him, staged a mutiny aimed at assassinating him and killed fellow soldiers.
