New Fiji council aims to sit next month

2:10 pm on 13 November 2007

Fiji's interim government hopes the proposed National Council for Building a Better Fiji will have its first sitting by the middle of next month.

The appointed body is supposed to be made up of a cross section of society.

It is planned to include all major political parties, religious and community organisations, private sector representatives and NGO's.

The Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister's Officer, Parmesh Chand, says the council could now be bigger than originally planned:

"Based on the initial proposal it was 40, but it has now been enlarged to 45 members to allow broader representation, and 34 out of that would be outside of government and 11 of the members would be from government side."

Several political parties and NGO's have already said they will not take part in the council, which is expected to prepare a People's Charter.
