Voters in Marshalls go to polls

6:01 am on 19 November 2007

Voters in the Marshall Islands will go to the polls today.

More than 36 000 voters are eligible to vote and they will elect 33 senators to the legislature for a four year term.

The publisher of the Marshall Islands Journal, Joe Murphy, says two major parties are contesting in this year's general election.

"The two main parties are the United Democratic Party and the AKA. They have been vying for seats in the parliament here. It has been difficult to pin down a major issue [to separate them]. There is the 'China Question' between Taiwan and Beijing and there is a question about renegotiating the compact [agreement] with the U.S."

Postal ballots will delay the counting of votes for about two weeks.
