Miss Tonga wins Miss South Pacific pageant

Miss Tonga, Tessi Leila Toluta'u, has won this year's Miss South Pacific pageant.

The 20 year old who lives in Hawaii was crowned last night in Apia.

The first runner up was Ms Cook Islands Joyce Fortes and Miss Samoa Sherry Elekana was second

runner up.

American Samoa has been given the go ahead to host next year's Miss South Pacific Pageant.

The decision was made in Apia after Director of Commerce, Faleseu Eliu Paopao, presented the territory's bid to the pageant's board of directors.

American Samoa presented the only bid.

American Samoa's Tourism Office Manager, Virginia Samuelu said Fiji had indicated that it would be bidding but a representative did not show up.

She gave details of next's year's competition which will be held in October

"Our bid has made the first prize US $5,000 and"

$US4,000 for the first runner up, second is US$3 and fourth I believe is US$2,000 and Papua New Guinea already has pledged to be a contestant next year and also a representative from Fiji.
