The Solomon Islands police commissioner, Jahir Khan, says his force is assessing the country's current political situation on a day-by-day basis.

This comes amid concern that the current political impasse between supporters and opponents of Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare could trigger unrest like events which led to the April 2006 riots in the capital, Honiara.

Commissioner Khan, has confirmed that there is an increased presence of police on Honiara's streets to allay fears among the public about political developments.

But he has praised local people for their lawfulness during the heated political climate.

"I think people have been very kind and very good so far, there has not been any adverse reporting and so far in public perception to us and as far as the community is concerned, I commend the general community for their well behaved stance in so far in a trying times in Solomon Islands."
