Police in Papua New Guinea have shot dead a man as they foiled an armed gang's attempt to steal a bank's shipment of cash by hijacking a plane.

Police say two security officers on the plane, who were also reserve policemen, apparently hijacked the plane and forced the pilot to land on Fishermen's Island off Port Moresby.

Masked gang members took the pilots by dinghy to the mainland but one gang member was later shot dead in an exchange of gunfire with police.

Two suspects, including the suspected mastermind, were captured.

The plane had been due to fly nearly two million US dollars worth of local currency to Kiunga and Tabubil in Western Province.

Police say the two pilots were rescued unharmed and the money was recovered.
