New Zealand is providing emergency funding to help people affected by severe flooding in Oro province in eastern Papua New Guinea.

New Zealand's Foreign Minister Winston Peters announced an initial contribution of 75 thousand US dollars of funding towards the PNG Red Cross in immediate supplying of mosquito nets, tarpaulins, water containers and cooking equipment.

Mr Peters said his Ministry is continuing to monitor the situation in Oro and neighbouring Milne Bay province and assessing the most urgent requirements.

He said New Zealand is ready to provide further assistance if this is sought.
