The Solomon Islands Prime Minister, Mannasseh Sogvare, and the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Patterson Oti have congratulated Australia's new Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, following his election victory.

Mr Sogavare said in a letter to Mr Rudd that he would be well aware that relations between the two countries had not been as warm and cordial as they should be under the leadership of John Howard.

He said he was confident of working closely with Mr Rudd's government towards the normalization of bilateral and diplomatic relations

Mr Oti said he trusted Mr Rudd's government would have a better understanding and appreciation of the development challenges facing small Island countries.
