Heavy rain causes flooding in parts of American Samoa

10:46 am on 30 November 2007

Heavy rainfall in American Samoa this morning has turned streets into rivers and lakes.

Some of the worst flooding occurred at Pago Pago, Fagaalu, Nuuuli, Fagaima, Ottoville and Malaeimi.

Some private schools cancelled classes.

Government schools were still open but many students were sent home after arriving at school soaking wet.

At Pago Pago, a combination of the stream overflowing and rain washing down the Fagasa road created conditions which our correspondent says, were reminiscent of the March 2003 flooding.

Several cars stalled on the road creating long traffic jams.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning.
