Solomons' new Finance Minister says he defected from Opposition after commitments from Government

2:46 pm on 30 November 2007

The new Finance Minister in Solomon Islands, Peter Boyers, says he joined the Government in the interests of the country.

Mr Boyers had been among an estimated 26 MPs who, since early this month have been demanding the Prime Minister, Manasseh Sogavare, call Parliament and allow a vote of no confidence to be held.

He has been accused by the Opposition of lacking credibility but the SIBC quotes Mr Boyers saying he has been assured by the Government that it will address his concerns.

Mr Boyers says he can only join a government that is dedicated to removing guns; that is opposed to arming the police; that will maintain the Regional Assistance Mission under the present arrangements; and investigate the illegal landing of Attorney General Julian Moti in the country.

He says Mr Sogavare agreed to these conditions.
