The first day of the Weightlifting World Cup competition in Samoa has seen Chinese lifter Liao Hui create history by setting a new world record in the 69 kilogramme division.

The 20-year old lifter bettered the old junior men's mark by 3kg when he lifted 190 kilogrammes in the clean and jerk.

It is the first time a world record has been set in the Pacific in any sports according to the International Weightlifting Federation or IWF.

Liao's world record feat underlies the depth of weightlifting in China.

He is not a certainty to compete at the Beijing Olympics with the current World and Olympic Champion in this division, Zhang Guozheng, set to be chosen ahead of him.
