Governor in Port Moresby goes to war against HIV/AIDS

7:12 pm on 3 December 2007

The Governor of the National Capital District in Papua New Guinea, Powes Parkop, says he is declaring war on HIV/AIDS.

Mr Parkop told a rally in Port Moresby on Saturday to mark World AIDS Day, that he wants to set up a network across the city which will allow awareness teams to work at street level.

He says from next year there will be two hundred thousand US dollars to facilitate this.

And Mr Parkop says school fees should be subsidised because he says many students turn to prostitution as a means of meeting the fee payments.

"There's a clear link because a lot of people are not able to afford School Fees - especially females. They are forced into finding other ways of sustaining themselves in school, or sustaining themselves in their whole lives, so some are turning to prostitution unfortunately. So there is a definite link."
