A U.S. company owned by descendants of the Swains Island's Jennings family has approached Governor Togiola Tulafono with proposals for alternative energy sources.

Swains Island delegate to the Fono, Alexander E Jennings, said the Texas-based Alpha Omega Energy proposes to use coconut oil and trash as alternative energy to help locals facing high costs of electricity due to continuous rise in fuel prices.

Governor Togiola said he is proud that American Samoans off-island have responded to the government's call for assistance in finding alternative ways to be less dependent on fossil or imported fuels.
