Solomons opposition denies PM's claim it kidnapped minister

2:06 pm on 12 December 2007

The Solomon Islands opposition vehemently denies kidnapping government minister Johnson Koli and forcing him to resign from the Government.

The Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare alleges Mr Koli was in his constituency for a funeral when he was taken against his will to sign a prepared resignation letter.

But the opposition leader, Fred Fono, says it is the Government who forced Mr Koli to resign from the opposition two weeks ago.

"We catergorically deny that. According to his own will, and his request, he asked us to arrange transport for him to pick him from his constituency back to Honiara. He has never been a member of the Government."

A spokesperson for the Solomons police says they will be speaking with Mr Koli today to ensure he is well, and not in any danger.
