Nauru rebel MP says speaker fails his duties

2:39 pm on 13 December 2007

The leader of a group of rebel MPs in Nauru, Dr Kieren Keke, says the speaker has failed to meet his constitutional obligations by not calling Parliament.

The legitimacy of the Ludwig Scotty Government has been in question since eight government members withdrew their support last month.

They want a vote of no confidence but the Speaker has ignored their petition for Parliament to meet.

Dr Keke says the Speaker has ignored his legal and constitutional obligations despite a petition which more than met the necessary number of signatures required to force the return of the parliament.

And he says the failure of the government to comment on Canberra's plans to shut down the asylum seeker detention camps is a clear example it is not functioning.
