The Asia Pacific Water Summit has set a new target to ensure everyone has access to clean drinking water and adequate sanitation by 2025.

Delegates from more than 35 countries attended a meeting in Japan this month, to try to solve the region's water and sanitation problems.

The region is the most vulnerable in the world, regarding water related disasters that hinder development and poverty reduction.

A spokesperson for the summit, Hideaki Oda, says disasters include cyclones, floods, droughts, tsunamis, landslides and water borne diseases and epidemics.

He says Pacific countries are particularly concerned about the impact of climate change on water resources.

"Many head of states coming from Pacific region they're insisting the problem of the impact of high tides and the drinking waters is now affected by the sea water. Therefore they're very anxious about climate change. Even now, the problem is so serious."
