Nauru MPs dump Scotty as President

6:55 pm on 19 December 2007

Nauru has dumped its President of the past four years, Ludwig Scotty.

This has been confirmed by the island's Australian consul general Martin Hunt, who says MPs are yet to decide who will become President in his place.

Mr Scotty was rolled after a mass walk of Government MPs angry at his failure to take action aagainst Foreign and Finance Minister, David Adeang, who they accused of corrupt actions.

Mr Adeang has denied the allegations.

His former close colleague, Dr Kieren Keke, who has led the breakaway group, says the vote of no confidence in the Scotty government is a chance to decide whether to continue the reform programme of the past three years or to return to the bad practices of the past.
