New Solomons government to focus on rural development

4:06 pm on 21 December 2007

The new Solomon Islands Government is promising an emphasis on rural development.

While the outgoing Sogavare Government had announced a Bottom Up Development Policy, little had occurred in the 19 months they held power.

The former Leader of the Opposition and a man likely to be a key member of the new Cabinet, Fred Fono, says the Sogavare Government allowed itself to be side tracked by other issues.

He says the new Government will not make the same mistake.

"We will certainly get the support of donors to implement that policy. At the same time we will spend more time on that rather spending time on petty things like the Julian Moti issue which the outgoing Prime Minister spent most of his time on."

The new Solomon Islands Cabinet will be revealed later this afternoon when they are sworn in.
