New Zealand businessman Khan charged in alleged Fiji murder plot

5:27 am on 9 January 2008

A New Zealand businessman, Ballu Khan, has been charged with three counts of conspiracy to murder Fiji's interim Prime Minister and two Cabinet ministers.

Mr Khan appeared in a special court sitting in Suva last night before Magistrate Aminiasi Katonivualiku, charged with three counts of conspiracy to murder.

This comes after his release from a Suva hospital where he was recovering from injuries suffered during his arrest last November.

The news website Fijilive reports that Mr Khan has denied the charges that he was the instigator and financier of the alleged plot.

Mr Khan was freed on bail despite the prosecutor saying he posed a flight risk as he owned sea-going vessels and was a foreign national.

The ten other co-accused are also free on bail.

The case has been adjourned until Monday.
