American Samoan treasurer resists resignation call

American Samoan Treasurer Velega Savali has informed Treasury staff that he will not resign but will leave it up to the governor to exercise his executive authority to remove him if that is his choice .

Velega had been asked by the Governor to submit his resignation by today otherwise he would exercise his executive authority to terminate his services.

Velega says he does not agree with claims that government finances are in bad shape.

He says he informed his staff that he has no intention of resigning but will await a decision by the governor.

Velega also informed Treasury employees that from today he will no longer make any decisions affecting the department.
