Tonga's supervisor of elections says he hopes more voters will register compared to the last general election.
Registration is underway for the election in April and the lists will be published on February 14.
The election will be held on April 23 for the election of Nobles Representatives and the election of People's Representatives the day after.
Pita Vuki says it appears only half of the registered voters voted last time, but it is hard to tell.
"The problem is that it doesn't really give you the right percentage of voter turnout, as some of the names which are currently on the roll migrate to overseas countries. So when you come to calculate the actual percentage of voter turnout it doesnt really reflect the true picture of the voting."
Pita Vuki says legislation is required to ensure future electoral statistics are more accurate.
