Supporters of a jailed French Polynesian party leader have organised a march in Papeete this weekend to show their support.

Emile Vernaudon of the Aia Api Party has been in prison for a month as part of an investigation in to alleged abuse of public funds when he was in charge of the state-owned post and telecommunications company.

Attempts to have him freed on bail to contest the territorial election in two weeks have been unsuccessful.

His partner replaces him on the list of candidates which has been drawn up with the To Tatou Aia Party of Gaston Tong Sang.

Last March, Emile Vernaudon was given an 18-month suspended prison sentence for corruption.

The criminal court has also fined Vernaudon 15,000 US dollars.
