Guam police urge public to stay off motorways

Guam police say their continued message to the public to stop jaywalking on busy motorways is not getting through.

This follows Guam's first traffic fatality for 2008 in an alleged hit-and-run incident yesterday on a notorious stretch of Route 3.

Of the 25 deaths on Guam's roads last year, two were hit-and-run cases and the perpetrators have yet to be found.

Guam Police Department spokesman Officer Allan Guzman says the latest victim was reportedly hit by two vehicles.

He says the second car stayed at the scene and called the police who are investigating the case.

Officer Guzman says those involved in traffic fatalities are often under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

"And often times it is the pedestrian that apprently finds himself impaired and then seem to wander off into roadways. It's something that we're pushing. We educate. We have been putting out campaigns for people to watch out for pedestrians and at the same time also make people aware th at while you're driving, watch out for people that can just pop out of nowhere."
