10:28 am on 16 January 2008

The Cook Islands government is due to make an appointment for one of its key positions at its Cabinet Meeting today.

The next Foreign Affairs Secretary will be chosen among five applicants, that include a former New Zealand High Commissioner to the Cook Islands, Kurt Meyer.

The Foreign Minister, Wilkie Rasmussen says the other four highly qualified are Mike Mitchell, Rohan Ellis, Carl Hunter and the only women applicant Vaine Wichman.

However, Mr Rasmussen says given the importance of the job, he is looking for specific qualities.

"Has to be a diplomat first and foremost, but also has to be fairly intelligent, and people orientated and has the ability to think international relations and must have a very very good understanding of the Cook Islands place in the region and of course globally."
