American Samoa's Governor Togiola Tulafono is to be airlifted to Honolulu this morning on a military aircraft for medical treatment.
The governor had his appendix removed on January 6th and was hospitalised for over a week.
Our correspondent in American Samoa, Monica Miller, says Togiola was recovering but experienced stomach pains and had another operation three days ago.
She says that while the Governor wanted to be treated locally, the Lieutenant Governor Ipulasi Aitosele Sunia was concerned for his health.
"As a precautionary measure, the Lieutenant Governor has decided that it is best to medivac the Governor to Honolulu to have him checked by doctors there. I do not believe that it is an emergency and that the Governor is in any danger. They're just wanting a second opinion and having him looked at by doctors in Honolulu. He's been in good health and I don't believe that he has suffered any major illnesses."
