The Cook Islands new Foreign Secretary concerned with Immigration Division

1:45 pm on 17 January 2008

The Cook Islands solictor general Michael Mitchell is in no doubt that there's a lot of work to be done to improve the Immigration Service.

Mr Mitchell has been appointed foreign secretary.

The foreign minister, Wilkie Rasmussen, said before the appointment that the Immigration Service was one division he wanted sorted out this year.

Mr Mitchell admits that the Immigration system is antiquated, with the current team having difficulty with records and systems.

"But that's not my strong point but I'm aware of it and will be looking very closely reorganising that division, as long as it remains a division of Foreign Affairs, but the issues they confront are quite different it's a bit of a worry that side of it."
