American Samoan bill calls for 10 percent import duty on appliance imports

A bill introduced in the American Samoa Senate would impose a 10 percent tax for all heavy equipment and home appliances imported into the territory for sale, personal or commercial use.

Sponsored by the Senate president, the tax would be applied to refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, stoves and ovens.

Also to be taxed are industrial or construction vehicles such as backhoes, dump trucks, forklifts, bulldozers, tractors, tow trucks, buses and other heavy equipment.

The bill provides that all appliances and equipment imported for sale., resale, personal or commercial use would be subject to the tax.

Revenues from the tax would be used for garbage collection and disposal and for sewer services.
