Local lawyer Gabriel Suri has been appointed as the Solomon islands acting Attorney General.

The post has been left vacant since the end of last month following the deportation of former attorney general Julian Moti back to Australia.

Mr Suri 's appointment is valid for six months during which the government will advertise the post.

Mr Suri from Malaita Province previously ran a private law firm in Honiara, which he relinquished a head of his appointment.

Meanwhile, the government is reported to have re-appointed the sacked special envoy to Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands, or RAMSI, Michael Maina.

Mr Maina was sacked by the former Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare last year.
