American Samoan doctors face dismissal over licensing dispute

7:20 pm on 24 January 2008

The Chief of Staff of LBJ Hospital in American Samoa says it's prepared to take legal action against the Hospital Authority Board over the licensing issue.

Dr Annie Fuavai, who is a graduate of the Fiji School of Medicine, is affected by the board's decision to have all doctors sit and pass the US Licensure Examination by June or they will be out of a job.

The affected doctors were given until the beginning of this week to make a commitment on whether they would take the test.

Dr Fuavai says the board has left them with no option but to seek legal advice.

"It is sad because they are treating us as unprofessional employees and they are also treating us as employees with no rights, but as we all know we are governed with laws with the American Samoa government. And we were not given the choice but to hire an attorney to handle this issue."
