Honolulu court sentences former American Samoa prison staff

The Honolulu federal district court has sentenced former prison warden Amituanai Mika Kelemete to two years in prison and former prison guard Siaumau Mapu to 3 years and three months in jail.

Amituana'i had pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit a civil rights violation related to the beating of an inmate at the prison in 2003.

Mapu pleaded guilty to beating another inmate and lying to federal agents who were investigating the allegations against warden Amituanai.

The two have to report to the Federal Detention Center in Honolulu on March 10 to begin their jail terms.

Upon release they will be on probation for three years.
