Tropical Cyclone Gene hits Fiji's West

8:17 pm on 28 January 2008

Tropical Cyclone Gene is already causing damage in Fiji as the depression moves over the country's west.

Viti Levu is expected to be hit hard as Gene intensifies moving southwest at about 20 kilometres an hour.

The Nadi Weather Office said people should not be outside their homes as the cyclone moves over their area, bringing damaging gale force wind and flooding due to heavy rain as well as sea surge and swell.

Continuous strong winds and heavy rain are expected to continue to cause power supply disruptions to parts of Fiji.

The Fiji Times reports that people living in the Suva-Nausori corridor as well as Deuba and major parts of Tailevu have experienced power blackouts.

And in Buca, police and village elders have moved villagers to higher grounds after their evacuation centre became flooded.
