The Fiji met office says a gale force warning remains in force for Viti Levu as a tropical cyclone currently passes over Nadi.

Tropical cyclone Gene flatten houses and brought down powerlines overnight on Fiji's main island of Viti Levu.

Many people in coastal villages on the west side of Viti Levu have moved to higher ground, with warnings of heavy seas and swells.

The Met office's senior forecaster, Matt Boterhoven, says while the cyclone intensified overnight, it is moving away from Viti Levu.

"Average wind speeds of around the cyclone at the moment are 95 kph with gust upto 140 kphs, during the next 18 hours or so it's expected to increase further as it moves warm waters."

Matt Boterhoven says the cyclone is slowly moving away from the Fiji group.
