Vanuatu prepares for Cyclone Gene

4:52 pm on 31 January 2008

Vanuatu's disaster management office says people in the southern islands should take extra measures to prepare for cyclone Gene.

It's a category 3 cyclone with winds of 120 kilometres per hour and is located about 180 kilometres to the east-north-east of Tanna in southern Vanuatu.

Gale force winds are expected for tonight and a hurricane warning is in place for tomorrow for the southern Islands of Vanuatu.

The office's spokesperson, Esrom Mosila, says it has issued a yellow alert warning.

"We have been asking the communities to make sure that their houses are well secured. We also ask them to make sure that they bring children back from school and also we have asked them to have supplies in place, like torches and radios."

Esrom Mosila says people should also store clean drinking water and secure their boats.
