11:24 am on 1 February 2008

China is to give Fiji an undisclosed sum of aid money which is to go towards the building of infrastructure such as bridges and rural roads and the construction of better homes for squatters.

The Fijilive website says the agreement was signed by Fiji's interim Minister of Finance Mahendra Chaudhry and the Chinese ambassador Cai Jinbiao.

Mr Chaudhry is quoted as saying the amount involved is yet to be quantified.

He said the money was made available under a technical and economic co-operation agreement signed by the two countries in April 2007.
