Solomons Police Commissioner Khan resigns

3:08 pm on 7 February 2008

The Solomon Islands Police Commissioner Jahir Khan has resigned amid mounting pressure from the government to remove him.

Earlier this week Prime Minister Derek Sikua sent a letter to the Commissioner, directing him to resign or face a tribunal under the Police Act.

Johnny Blades reports.

"Mr Khan's appointment last year came after the previous Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare declared former Commissioner, Australian Shane Castles, persona non grata. The Indo-Fijian's controversial appointment quickly became an unpopular one with many Solomon Islanders when he started to push for re-armament of local police. This is one of the main reasons why the new Sikua government wanted his removal him from the role. The cabinet was also dissatisfied with what is seen as Mr Khan's political meddling as well as a decline in the general performance of the police during his tenure in the role. It's understood Mr Khan has already applied for a United Nations job."
