Fiji regime declines detailing Hunter expulsion reasons

4:11 pm on 27 February 2008

The interim Fiji Government has no intention of revealing the precise reasons for expelling Russell Hunter from the country.

Yesterday, the interim Defence and Immigration Minister, Ratu Epeli Ganilau, issued a statement saying Mr Hunter was deported because he was a security threat and had been declared a prohibited immigrant.

Asked today to elaborate on the nature of that threat, Ratu Epeli says they are not yet prepared to divulge that information.

"I think when it comes to national security matters no government is obligated to tell anybody or the public about what constitutes a national security threat and I think we have to respect that. Suffice to say he was in breach of his work permit conditions and that was the action taken by Government."
