French Polynesia's president under pressure to name coalition government

12:08 pm on 29 February 2008

French Polynesia's president, Gaston Flosse, has until the end of the day to notify the French high commission of the line-up of his coalition government.

If Mr Flosse fails to submit the list he is considered to have resigned.

He has been in talks with the Union For Democracy since he was elected president at the weekend, defeating the To Tatou Aia candidate, Gaston Tong Sang, by 29 to 27 votes.

Mr Flosse's Tahoeraa Huiraatira was expected to get five ministries and the Union For Democracy ten but negotiations appear to have been inconclusive.

His election is also at the centre of an opposition challenge in the French supreme court, amid claims that there were four procedural errors made in the process.

A ruling is expected within two days.

Meanwhile, the assembly is due to be reconvened tomorrow to elect an assembly president after the resignation of the Tahoeraa's Edouard Fritch.
