Call for Fiji's President to sack head of Human Rights Commission

Fiji's Pacific Centre for Public Integrity has called for President Ratu Josefa Iloilo's intervention to dismiss the Fiji Human Rights Commission Director, Shaista Shameem, from office.

The PCPI executive director, Angie Heffernan's, statement comes after the release of a report commissioned by Fiji's Human Rights organisation into the independence of the media.

Fiji Live says the document by the Hawaiian-based academic, James Anthony, received strong criticisms from a wide sector of the media fraternity, organisations and individuals.

The report has recommended that all existing work permits for expats in the media not be renewed

Ms Heffernan said the report not only contained "nonsensical contents", it condoned racism against white media owners and human rights violation

She said the assault against Fiji's media was full of assumptions, and worst of all, did not have verified sources who were willing to put their names to their statements.
