The American Samoa Governor, Togiola Tulafono, has asked the federal government to exempt American Samoa from the cabotage rule which prohibits a foreign airline from flying between two US ports.
Togiola made the request at a meeting of the Inter Agency group for Insular Affairs, last week in Washington D.C.
The governor says American Samoa's push for tourism is hampered by limited flights to the territory.
Hawaiian Air flies twice weekly between Honolulu and Pago Pago and adds a third flight during the summer and festive season.
Togiola says a waiver from the cabotage rule would help entice another carrier to the territory.
