PNG health secretary deplores Moresby hospital situation

The head of Papua New Guinea's health system says he is saddened by the state of the Port Moresby General Hospital.

The Health Secretary, Dr Clement Malau, said the sorry state of the national referral hospital can be put down to bad management.

Dr Malau said at the weekend that he had visited the hospital several times and found that reports of shortages of medicines and doctors were correct.

In an interview with the Post Courier newspaper he said he had seen women giving birth on the concrete floor at the maternity ward, a situation for which he apologised.

Dr Malau says some decisions on what can be done to remedy the situation will be announced shortly.
