The Solomon Islands Governor General has encouraged the country's young people to be accountable for the environment they live in.

Speaking at a ceremony marking the Commonwealth Day, Sir Nathaniel Waena, said that his countrymen must take good care of the entire environment in and around them on earth.

The theme of the 2008 Commonwealth Day is "Environment-Our Future".

Sir Nathaniel said mankind has become greedy and careless, and as a result brought about serious damage to the environment.

The Governor General said in order to slow down the rapid effects of global warming, youth must stand and recognise their talents and potential in order to sustain the very survival of the succeeding generation.

He said youth must be involved in environment training courses and volunteer organisations to facilitate environmental awareness and educate people not only in Solomon Islands but also in the Region.
