PNG diplomat moots idea of Federated States of Melanesia

The outgoing Papua New Guinea High Commissioner to New Zealand, Bernard Narakobi, says he believes a Federated States of Melanesia would help each of the countries to better tackle the major problems they face.

He says the Melanesian countries, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Fiji and PNG are struggling alone to combat issues such as health and education services, and unemployment.

And Mr Narakobi says the Melanesian Spearhead Group would eventually be the ideal agency to handle problems such as those now covered by the Australian led Regional Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands.

"As it is now it is not the ideal because it is not faced with the same resources, same manpower, same personnel, or similar to what exists in Australia and New Zealand being the the primary forces in this RAMSI."
