The Nauru Government says while it is safe and calm after a violent protest last Friday, a squad of 100 volunteers called in by police, remains on duty.

The Foreign and Finance Minister, Dr Kieren Keke, says separate investigations are underway into two separate incidents, including the torching of the main police station.

He says a family clan with long standing grievances and their local MP, the Opposition Leader, Rene Harris, could face a raft of charges, and others will follows over the fire, which is being investigated by Australian arson experts.

Dr Keke says the Government did consider asking donors for more policing assistance.

"And it was felt that we didn't need outside help and that the police have the authority to call in reserves if needed, and it has been clear that since calling in the reserves there have been no threats and no disorder of any kind, and so we are confident that the police have law and order well in hand and that everybody on Nauru is safe."
